MISSISSIPPI ACTION FOR PROGRESS, INC. Region Updates

Region I

All centers in Region 1 are engaged in identical activities pertaining to Education and Teacher Support.
  • All Centers in Region 1 were provided Educational Packets provided from Central Office/Program Services to parents and from EHS/Central Office to EHS families
  • All Center Staff received an identical training from the ECE Specialist regarding educational expectations 


Region III

All Centers have developed similar home activity packets from information received from Central Office.  Additionally, the Centers are adding additional information to include video story reading and other online educational websites.  Parents will be asked to return completed homework to the teachers.  Upon receipt of the completed homework, new homework will be given to parents for their child to complete.


Region IV

The ECE Specialist and Coaches have prepared educational packets for the children enrolled at the Gilliam Head Start and Gilliam Early Head Start Center. The packets were delivered by bus for those which transportation was provided. For those not requiring transportation, the parents reported to the center to pick up their educational packets. The children enrolled in the Early Learning Collaborative educational packets are downloaded from the GLCSD website. On March 25 a total of 202 educational packets were delivered by bus and 34 were picked up from the center. The parents are reporting on Monday and Wednesday to pick up packets. A total of 76 educational packets were picked up by Gilliam Early Head Start parents.


Region V

The Staff will be utilizing educational APPs such as ABC Mouse, Eppic Literacy, GROUP ME, and Touchstone as well as educational material provided from Program Services Education Department.

Region VI

Educational Packets have been copied and delivered to all students. CLASS and CPI data is being reviewed to give more in-depth feedback to teachers and center administrators.


Region VII

  • The ECE Specialist and ECE Coaches copied Education Activity packs as well as supplied pencils and crayons if requested.
  • The packs were distributed through Grab and Go process over 80% of packs were delivered
  • Parents are picking up remaining packs from the Center
  • Early Head Start Parents are picking up their Grab and Go Educational Packs
  • Parents will receive pull-ups, pampers and wipes, they will be distributed on 3-30-2020.  Child Care Providers assisted
  • Volunteer in-kind forms were included in Education Packs


Region VIII

  • The ECE Specialist and ECE Coach made copies of education activity packs as well as gather resources to include crayons, scissors and pencils for each child
  • During the week of 03/23/2020 - Grab and go packs of the education packs (Section 1- Language and Literacy) were distributed on three days from the center bus ramp areas at the Yazoo City Center and the Bentonia-Gibbs.  Approximately 75% of the parents picked up packs.
  • Additional resource flyers were provided in the packs to include information on:  Coronavirus Disease COVID-19 Symptoms and Preventing Spread; CDC Proper Handwashing Procedures; and List of Educational Children Learning Websites.
  • Week of 03/30/2020.  On Monday, More Educational Packs-Resources distributed from the Yazoo City Center (added Section 2- Fine Motors).  On Wednesday, more Educational Packs (adding Section 3 – Mathematics) will be delivered by Bus Drivers and FCWs to families to homes, to bus stops, apartment complex offices to maximize percentage of distribution to Head Start children
  • For Yazoo EHS, activity packs were distributed during the week of 03/23/2020 and 03/30/2020 to EHS Families along with resource flyers and information data sheets.  The parents were also given diapers, pull-ups and wipes with the packs as a part of the grab and go outreach.  The Childcare providers alternated schedules over a two-day period during this week to come in the centers and print out Individual Learning Objectives for each child for parents to work with babies and EHS children.
  • Volunteer In-kind Forms were included in all packs for both the Week of 03/23/2020 and 03/30/2020 for parents/guardians to document their volunteer efforts in completing home activities with children.


Region IX

Belmont Center – the education staff prepares education materials on Monday and will distribute the educational activities each Friday of the week with the Back Pack ministry’s snack packs.
Burnsville Center – distributes the educational activities each Friday of the week with the Back Pack ministry’s snack packs.
Chalybeate Center – mails the educational activities to each parent and makes contact with parents to discuss how to implement the activities. The teaching staff plan read to the children via the center’s Facebook page weekly and answer any questions the parents and/or children may have.
Corinth Center – distributes the educational activities each Friday of the week with the Buddy Pack ministry’s snack packs. The collaborative group will provide activities for the four-year-old children. The teaching staff are using the Find Friends application to contact parents.
Iuka Center – the education staff prepares education materials on Mondays of each week and will distribute the educational activities each Friday of each week with the Back Pack ministry’s snack packs. The teaching staff use the center’s Facebook page to stay in contact with parents and read stories to the children.
Prather Center – The teaching staff prepares education packs for the children and parents on Thursday and distributes the packages on Friday weekly. For parents who do not have transportation, the teaching staff will contact the parents to let them know the activities are mailed to their home. The teaching staff will contact the parents by phone to discuss the activities weekly and as needed.
 
EHS
The Center Administrators for Belmont and Corinth centers distributed pull-ups they have on hand to parents as needed. The Center Administrators made personal phone calls to each EHS of their parents to offer pull-up as needed and until all have been distributed. The Regional Administrator contacted Regional Administrators in neighboring Regions (5,6, and 10) to let them know EHS supplies we have on hand that are available to them.
 

Region X

Mrs. Cherry has worked with the local food service directors on the number of preschool children in Head Start and the selection of sites for meal service.  Mrs. Cherry also contacted the local Hunger Coalition, MAP community partner, for information on the boxed food for families.  Family Resource Center was also contacted for the provision of services.  They have formula and baby food available.  

Mrs. Angeleque Beene assisted the Baldwyn School District with the drive through meal service to families.  Packets were given to meal site for preschool children. 

Mrs. Vasser is working with her church in preparing the boxed food. 

All Center Administrators and staff will notify parents regarding the meal services offered.  
 
March 23-27th – Educational packets were made by ECE specialist and ECE coach for each center.  These packets were distributed to each CA who will meet with education staff and determine by center the most effective way of delivering packets to families.  Teachers are contacting parents to determine who has internet access in the home for possible online activities. 
 
Aberdeen – Buses will be utilized to make deliveries to city points, Hamilton area, White Rock Road, and Aberdeen High School meal site.  A bin with materials will also be available each day outside the center. 
 
Amory – The center will leave packets at the West Amory School site with the meal deliveries.  A bin of activities will also be available for parents at the school.
 
Verona – EHS has made videos and sent to parents of EHS children with age appropriate songs, activities, and nursery rhymes.  One EHS provider used her bathtub as a white board for teaching parents and young children. 
Saltillo & Pontotoc – The bus will run the regular route with the pick-up points.  Parents have been notified that activities for one week will be available at these points.  The route will continue for the duration of the closure.  Parents may also pick up packets outside the building.
