Region I

Nutrition Report - Meals provided by School District (March 2020)

All centers in Region 1 engaged in the identical activity of support as directed on behalf of the Director of Health.
It was identified in Region 1 that all food banks contacted in Hancock and Pearl River County were temporarily closed due to COVID-19. There were no existing food banks in Perry County.  As a result, the center and regional office staff hosted and engaged in activities to support enrolled families and communities interlaced to nutrition.
Activities consisted of:
  • Center Level – each site distributed a Grab and Go (Milk Distribution) to families, teachers, and individuals within the community OR
Grab and Go (Supply distribution – milk, diapers, and/or pull ups) for enrolled families.
  • Regional Level – Regional Staff engaged our community by distributing to milk to children within our communities in Pearl River County
  • Regional Level – donated produce to churches in Pearl River County (Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church)

Region II

  • Meals are being served to children by local school districts in Lincoln, Claiborne, Franklin and Warren Counties.
  • The City of Vicksburg is sponsoring meals for seniors and local churches are doing the same in the other three counties.
  • Grocery stores are also allowing seniors to shop during designated hours to give them an opportunity to purchase food and other needed items such as disinfectant cleaners, tissue and paper towels.  
  • Parents who are not receiving Public Assistance are encouraged to contact the Mississippi Food Network for nutrition assistance

Region III

In Scott County, nutritious meals have been provided for children by Vowell’s Market Place, Forest Municipal School District and Scott County School District.
 
For Lauderdale County, parents were informed of local meal distribution programs for children up to the age of 18.  Meals are being provided at Clarkdale Attendance Center, Northeast Elementary, Southeast High and West Lauderdale Middle School and Cash Saver grocery store in Meridian.
 

Region IV

GLCSD is providing lunch to all children 18 and under. Additionally, the local churches and motorcycle clubs are also providing dinner to children 18 and under. The parents or children may pick up the meals at strategic locations and at the request of the parent the meals may be delivered.
 

Region V

All families in Region V have been informed of meal sites through-out the area for school age children to pick-up daily breakfast and lunch meals.
 

Region VI

All centers have partnered with school districts or community agencies to provide meal options for parents and students.
 

Region VII

Louisville Public School, Philadelphia Public School, and Neshoba Public School System are providing food for our Head Start Children, as well as several feeding sites offering free Grab and Go breakfast and lunch.
 

Region VIII

Community partner, MASD -Yazoo City Schools, has a feeding program. The city school has two sites at the elementary school set up to provide grab and go meals to all children 18 and under. In addition to the Yazoo City Schools where meals are available to our Yazoo City Head Start Center and Yazoo EHS children, the Yazoo County School District began administering free meals on Monday, 03/23/2020 to children at 10 different sites to include the Bentonia area, where meals are available to our Bentonia-Gibbs Head Start children.
 

Region IX

The distribution of meals is taking place at the following locations:
Alcorn County
Corinth Center collaborates with the First Presbyterian Church to provide Buddy Packs of snacks. Grab and go breakfasts and lunches are provided by all the schools in the Corinth school district. The Alcorn County school district provide the breakfast and lunch. Both school districts provide meals for children birth to 18 years old. Other agencies and organizations also provide meals for 18-year-olds to adults for a small price.
Tippah County
Grab and go breakfasts and lunches provided by the North and South Tippah schools and the Back Pack Ministry have been suspended at this time due to the sharp increase in the number of cases of the coronavirus in the county. Before the suspension of these programs, Chalybeate and Prather Centers respectively were served as well as children birth to 18 years old. We have some concerns about families having enough food.
Tishomingo County 
Belmont, Burnsville, and Iuka centers collaborate with local churches with distributing snack packs. The Tishomingo County school district provides grab and go breakfasts and lunches for all children birth to 18 years old in the community.
 

Region X

Lee County 
Lee County School District will provide 2 sack grab and go meals per day 5 days a week at the local school sites for children 18 years and younger.
Tupelo Public School District will provide 2 sack grab and go meals per day 5 days a week at the local school sites for children 18 years and younger.
Baldwyn Public School District will provide 2 sack grab and go meals per day 5 days a week at the local school sites for children 18 years and younger.  The staff at the school district are also handing out educational activities one day per week to children who are picking up meals.  

Hunger Coalition in Tupelo are feeding families and children by providing boxed food in Tupelo, MS.

One local church set up a food table to feed the Green Street community.  

Pontotoc County.
Pontotoc City School District 2 sack grab and go meals per day 5 days a week at the local school sites for children 18 years and younger.  The staff at the school district are also handing out educational activities one day per week to children who are picking up meals.  These activities started on Thursday March 19th at Pontotoc High School.

Pontotoc County will provide 2 sack grab and go meals per day 5 days a week at the local school sites for children 18 years and younger.  The staff at the school district are also handing out educational activities one day per week to children who are picking up meals’ services starting on March 23rd.

Monroe County
Amory School District will provide 2 sack grab and go meals per day 5 days a week at the local school sites for children 18 years and younger starting March 23rd.  The staff at the school district are also handing out educational activities one day per week to children who are picking up meals.  The Location is West Amory Elementary School across the street from Amory Head Start.

Local churches are also preparing boxed food for families in Monroe County.
Aberdeen School District is providing meals at Aberdeen High School and White Rock Church. 
 

Region XI

Attala County:
Center Administrator / Clerk are developing a Community Resource letter which will be delivered to each parent

Holmes School district use buses to transport meals to families. The school district will add extra meals on the buses for the Head Start Children. 
Families can receive food at bus stops throughout the county.
Durant City schools do not provide bus services the lunches can be picked up at the school

Winona Baptist Church - 
The church provides lunches for everyone. Families contact the church; members of each community pick up and deliver to families who request deliveries. Duck Hill CA assists with food deliveries and have informed Head Start families in Montgomery County
