Winston County Complex - Multicultural Fair
Winston County Complex in Louisville, MS held their first multicultural fair. It was an opportunity for the children, staff, parents and the community to learn about and indulge a little in other cultures.
The event started with the judging of the doors. The judges were comprised of citizens of the Louisville community. They went around to each door and judged it based on the criteria they were given. Each door depicted a different country and the children in that unit were dressed as the natives of that country. Some of the countries depicted were Italy, Canada, Africa, Mexico and Japan.
While the judges were busy judging the doors. the audience was treated to a "crash course" in Liberian Culture by Dr. Zachariah Gaye, a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at Jackson State University. Dr. Gaye is a native of Liberia, which is in Western Africa bordering the North Atlantic Ocean. He spoke to the audience about the history and culture of the country and showed comparisons between it and the United States. In fact Liberia's flag is strikingly similar to the flag of the United States. The audience seemed to really enjoy his presentation.
After the doors were judged, the judges were asked to taste the fair of different countries. The food services staff had prepared dishes that were native to the chosen countries. The most endearing offering was collard greens and corn bread for the United States. After all categories had been judged, the following placements were announced:
