MISSISSIPPI ACTION FOR PROGRESS, INC. FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM

The mission of the Mississippi Action For Progress, Incorporated (MAP, Inc.) Family Literacy Program is to plan, develop, implement, and maintain a coordinated, comprehensive system of continuous improvement that will meet and support the literacy need of MAP, Inc. Head Start Families.

Functions:

    1. To coordinate literacy efforts in MAP's twenty-one (21) counties.
    2. To coordinate available resources.
    3. To set necessary policy for literacy work in MAP's twenty-one (21) counties.

Role:

    1. To serve as a facilitator to identify available resources that may be used by MAP's adult education programs.
    2. To serve as a central source of information relating to adult education/literacy involving new technologies.
    3. To formulate a state-wide literacy agenda.

MAP offers the following adult education programs:

- General Equivalency Degree (GED) Training . This is a program in which persons are taught certain skills to prepare them to take a test to obtain the equivalent of a high school diploma.

- English as a Second Language (ESL) Courses . These programs teach people the basic skills to speak and understand English. The class concludes with a test measuring students progress towards fluency in the English language.

- Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes . These classes enable residents to develop the ability to read, write, and perform basic math. Learners progress to GED classes.

- Basic Computer Literacy Workshops . These workshops introduce people to the keyboard, the mouse, how to turn the machine on and off, and some basic applications which will enable them to use the computer without supervision and prepare them for more advanced computer training in the future.
